Artist of the Month
Sun, water, sand, July, heat. Imagine it. Can you feel it? It’s the time of the year, when everyone goes on a vacation. But not everywhere is summer known like this. We’ve noticed that in Olot in Spain 22 year old young student works hard. Take a look at her illustrations, because Haili WY is our artist of the month.
How do you think a young illustrator/beginner can find their own style?
I personally believe that it definitely takes some time for an artist to find their own, unique style. Frankly for me, I am still in the process of seeking and trying different techniques to see what suits me the most, and at the moment pointillism is my favorite. It’s all about exploring other artist’s works and get inspired from them, you combine all the styles you love and add your personal touch, I believe that’s basically the way of finding your own style.
You love Dotwork, can you tell us more about this style and why do you personally love this type of illustration?
I remember that while I was studying graphic design once a teacher gave us an assignment, which was to create a drawing using this style. And that is where I started to really got into this kind of style. I did a realistic portrait and was really happy with the result. So, I decided to try to create my own art with such technique.
I love this kind of style because for me it is a style that you need to be aware of every point you’re making, therefore, you can have total control of what you’re drawing, unlike techniques that are more unpredictable such as watercolor because you can never really imagine what kind of texture will it create once the paper is fully dry, which is the beauty of it. I personally prefer the pointillism because I like to enjoy the process of building something bigger from the basic shape, such as points. Apart from that I am also a big fan of engraving style illustration.
Coloured or black&white illustration?
Black and white for sure, I believe for a style with such complex details, even it is needed to be colored, one plain coat of color is enough.
What are your interests outside of illustration?
I like to play guitar and sing, but I’m not really good at it to be frankly. Other than that I also like alternative music and movies, anything that doesn’t request one to move constantly 😉
How do you get your ideas?
My best friend is my muse. She constantly appears in my drawings, and sometimes inspirations just comes along without you asking for it. Surrealism theme is my favourite.
